About Us

Birding Abroad is a small and friendly bird and wildlife tour company, owned and operated by Lance Degnan and Nick Whitehouse. We formed our earliest partnership as long ago as 1972, when as young teenagers living in Doncaster, we began bird watching together, visiting local nature reserves and learning the basics about birds. Our passion for bird watching grew and we soon began a long association with Spurn Point on the Yorkshire coast which further inspired us to hone our skills as bird watchers, subsequently spreading our wings both in the UK and overseas. We have remained good friends for almost 50 years.

Lance has served at national level of bird recording as a member of the British Birds Rarities Committee and still maintains a caravan at Spurn as a weekend retreat. Nick has served on the Yorkshire Rare Birds Panel and more recently as a member of the Dorset Records Panel. Lance is a previous and Nick a current member of the Spurn Bird Observatory Trust Committee. Between us we have been fortunate to discover some very rare birds on the east coast and inland too, including Black-browed Albatross, Audouin's Gull, Calandra Lark, Blyth's Pipit, Siberian Accentor, Yellow-breasted Bunting and both Lanceolated and Blyth's Reed Warblers. Both of us agree, however, that it is our love of all birds, not just the rare or scarce ones, which inspires our passion for being out in the field.

For over ten years, we had been planning, organising and leading bird watching tours to various countries on behalf of friends and associates, very much on an informal basis. In 2014 we decided the time was right for us to use our combined experience to create a new, small and friendly bird and wildlife tour company - Birding Abroad. It is our pleasure and privilege to provide our clients with all the ingredients that make for a successful and enjoyable bird watching tour: carefully selected destinations, well organised and sensibly paced itineraries, personal assistance in getting the best views possible, a supportive and warm group environment and of course excellent value for money.

Lance and Nick personally plan, organise and lead each tour. We particularly enjoy having a mix of beginners and more experienced birders from a variety of backgrounds on our tours, which encourages a fun, relaxed and learning spirit amongst the travelling members of the group.

Previous bird watching tours have taken us to Iceland, Estonia, France, Spain, Sicily, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Morocco, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Oman, India, Cuba, USA (Texas, Colorado and Ohio) and Canada (Point Pelee), whilst our personal birding ventures have taken us further afield to China, Thailand, South Korea, the Caribbean and South America

We are both family men, having lived for the majority of our lives in Doncaster. Recently, following retirement from the police service, Nick relocated to Bournemouth, his wife's home town, where he enjoys learning about the south coast bird watching scene.

So why not join Lance and Nick on a Birding Abroad tour? We are gaining a solid reputation for our expert and friendly tour leadership and guiding skills, with many returning customers testimony to the care and attention we put into making each tour an enjoyable success. You will be assured of a warm welcome!
